What is a satellite?

A satellite is a man-made object that is sent into space using rockets and then made to orbit (revolve around) the Earth. Once it has been placed in orbit, it can be used for communication or for sharing information.

We use satellites in many ways:

  • Television signals are sent by a broadcaster like Star TV to our homes through satellites. TV services such as Tata Sky and Dish TV work through satellites
  • When ships need to communicate with other ships or with someone on land, satellite phones are used
  • Weather satellites are used to track the climate so that we can know in advance about approaching rain or storms
