Taking aim for Tokyo

Deepika Kumari and Atanu Das shot winning arrows from their bows to bring home individual gold medals from the Archery World cup held recently at Guatemala City in Central America. This automatically qualifies them for the Archery World Cup Final that will be held later this year. They will also be competing at the Tokyo Olympics in July-August 2021.

India won three golds and a bronze at the World Cup, its best ever showing at an event of this level. The first gold came from the women’s team of Deepika, Ankita Bhakat and Komalika Bari who won a team gold after seven years when they beat favourites Mexico. The other two came from Deepika and Das, who won gold in their individual events. While it was Deepika’s third World Cup gold, it was the first for Das. “It feels amazing. It’s like dreams are coming true. I have worked for so many years and now this is paying off. This is my first title and I’m very happy,” Das said after the event.

Deepika Kumari and Atanu Das are married to each other and will be India’s first couple at the Olympics. “We travel together, train together, compete together and win together,” said Das.
