Indian Premier League (IPL) team Rising Pune Super Giants has replaced MS Dhoni as captain for the 10th season of the league that begins next month. Pune will be led by Australian Steve Smith while Dhoni will stay on a regular player.
The owners of the Pune team made it clear that they had asked Dhoni to step aside as the team had performed poorly in 2016 finishing seventh out of eight teams. Dhoni had moved to the Pune team after his original IPL team Chennai Super Kings (CSK) was banned for two years (2016-2017).
Dhoni remains one of the most successful IPL players and captains. He has led 143 matches in the IPL, winning 83, making him the most successful league captain. He has also helped CSK lift the IPL trophy twice in 2010 and 2011 and the Champions League (an international T20 league) in 2010 and 2014.
