Over 600 baby Olive Ridley turtles were released into the sea at Visakhapatnam on the east coast of Andhra Pradesh this week. The turtles hatched out of eggs laid by adult Ridleys on the city’s beach.
Every year lakhs of Olive Ridley turtles visit the beaches of the eastern coast of India and lay eggs. In order to protect these eggs from stray dogs and even humans, officials in the forest department of Andhra Pradesh moved the eggs that were laid on beaches around Visakhapatnam and took them to hatcheries. Once baby turtles hatched, they were released into the sea.
